Dr Birnbaum is currently Director of the Division of Rheumatology at California Medical Center and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. Since 1977, Dr Birnbaum has enjoyed the private practice of rheumatology in San Francisco. He is the managing partner of Pacific Rheumatology Associates. Chief of Rheumatology since 1983, Dr. Birnbaum has also twice been Chief of Staff at California Pacific Medical Center. Highly regarded by both patients and colleagues, his clinical skills have been recognized by inclusion in every edition of Castle Connolly Top Doctors. Dr Birnbaum was active in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) for many years, serving as the 2006-2007 ACR president. Dr Birnbaum was Chair of the Medical and Scientific Committee and Vice-chairman for Medical Affairs of the northern California chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. He was a founding board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Dr. Birnbaum was named an ACR Master in 2011. In 2018, Dr. Birnbaum received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Rheumatology Alliance.

In addition to his active practice, Dr. Birnbaum enjoys golf on Sunday mornings, international travel with his wife Linda, a retired educator, as well as spending time with his daughters, Jen Birnbaum and Lauren Morris and his grandchildren, Lily (age 7) and Oliver (age 4).
