Dr. Merz
Adult Reconstruction and Hip Preservation
Medical Honoree

Dr. Merz graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree at Baylor University before attending medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. After finishing medical school, he completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He completed two fellowships after residency—adult reconstruction and hip preservation. He was an Otto E. Aufranc fellow in adult reconstruction at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA.

Due to his specific interest in the hip, Dr. Merz completed a second fellowship in hip-preserving surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. He underwent comprehensive training with leaders in the field for patients with hip conditions, from birth through middle age.

Harper
Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Youth Honoree

Harper was diagnosed with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis at 18 months old after she complained that her shoes were “ouch-y” in the mornings. She went through months of doctor appointments ending with this diagnosis that initially affected 18 of her joints. Harper has been receiving treatment for the past 8.5 years consisting of many injections, medications and a few outpatient hospital visits. You wouldn't know her diagnosis in passing because Harper is an active, happy, gymnastics-loving 10 year old. Thanks to her amazing doctor at Duke, she has been in stable condition for almost a year.
