 Peighton is a loving, caring, and helpful 9-year-old who happens to have juvenile arthritis and uveitis. After being diagnosed at the age of 2 with oligoarthritis and then uveitis at 3, Peighton is still happy and positive. Recently she joined a local swimming club, and really enjoys it, plus it’s very good for her health. Peighton’s arthritis is in medical remission, but the battle with uveitis has been her beast to conquer. Making 2 hour drives one-way to see the eye specialist, she finds lots of time for her passion of reading and music. She will conquer uveitis as well!

Shawn Mahmud is a lifelong Minnesotan and an alumnus of the M.D./Ph.D. training program at the University of Minnesota, where he completed pediatric residency and fellowship training in pediatric rheumatology before joining the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics in 2022. He has a longstanding interest in immunology research and is working to start his own research laboratory in the Center for Immunology. His primary research interest is in learning to track, characterize and maybe even manipulate self reactive T cells in human autoimmune diseases.
Marcella was diagnosed at the age of 3 with juvenile arthritis and at 4 with uveitis. She had multiple doctor’s appointments a week for many months and after about a year, doctors found a treatment plan that worked. With arthritis comes many struggles like missing school frequently and often having to take breaks and rest. Her uveitis also makes it difficult for her to drive at night. But Marcella doesn’t let her arthritis stop her. She plays club softball and is on her high school’s ski team. Marcella also attends camp Sisu where she has formed an amazing group of friends who share the same journey.
