2021 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

Linda M. Hellebuyck, CPA
Corporate Chair

Linda says, "Almost all of us know someone, a family member, friend or colleague, that has been affected by arthritis. It’s hard to watch those you care about in pain, knowing they suffer daily with something so difficult to effectively treat." Linda became more aware when her friend’s daughter, Rylee was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. She often recalls finding her on the boat or running and jumping off her dock. She says, "It’s disheartening to watch her movements because she’s in pain, but that doesn’t stop her from having fun. She’s a kid, she wants to play, but the consequences can be seen for days. I’m honored to help with such an important cause to help find a cure."

Shari Smith
Adult Honoree

Shari is 59 and has arthritis in both hands which has spread to her neck. Arthritis has made it difficult for her to do simple everyday things. The worst part is not being able to pick up her grandchildren. This terrible disease has not only impacted Shari and her husband but also, her 9-year-old granddaughter, who was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) at 2. Shari said, “It really hits home when you begin to go through it, also watching your grandchild go through it. Open your heart, show your support, so no child has to go through this again.”

At age 3 after a small fall and swollen knee that lasted 6 weeks, she was diagnosed with JIA. Over the last 5 years, she has endured difficult procedures, weekly injections, and rounds of physical therapy. Rylee is an “Arthritis Warrior”. She is a strong little girl who always has a smile on her face and never lets her pain stop her from doing things she loves.
