We are thrilled to announce the 2020 Jingle Bell Run & Drive Corporate Chairs, Dr. Thomas A. Rennie and Helen Hinkle of Rheumatology Associates of South Texas.

Rheumatology Associates of South Texas (RAST) has been serving South Texas since 2005 and has 2 convenient locations in San Antonio. They are comprised of six Board-Certified Rheumatologists who are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis, vasculitis, inflammatory muscle disease, scleroderma, and many others.

RAST is committed to changing and improving the lives of arthritis warriors by providing personal and exceptional care. Dr. Rennie also serves on the local leadership board of the Arthritis Foundation.

Chester Jones
Military Honoree


Chester Jones, retired Sergeant First Class, served 24 years in the Army. He joined the military in 1989 as an infantry soldier and then went on to be a drill sergeant, instructor, airborne air assault and had 8 combat deployments. He married the love his life in 1992 and has 3 children. Mr. Jones is the Patient Ambassador for Advanced Pain Care. With arthritis in his knees and his back, Mr. Jones is passionate about educating our communities about how arthritis is impacting our military. 1 of 3 veterans lives with arthritis and it is a top reason that servicemen and women are discharged.

Jamal Hasson, MD
Medical Honoree


Dr. Jamal “Jamie” Hasoon is a native Texan born and raised in Houston, Texas and practices Interventional Pain Management at the Central Texas Pain Center. He completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and anesthesiology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was recognized for clinical and academic excellence. Dr. Hasoon furthered his training at the prestigious Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he completed advanced fellowship training in interventional pain management and was awarded Outstanding Pain Fellow of the Year.

Gregory Yanez, MD
Medical Honoree


Gregory Yanez, MD is fellowship trained in interventional pain management and practices at the Central Texas Pain Center. He grew up in San Antonio, TX. He completed his B.A. at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ before attending Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. Dr. Yanez completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He then went on to complete his Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York, NY. For our Spanish speaking community, Dr. Yanez speaks Spanish.

Valarie Campos
Psoriatic Arthritis
Adult Honoree


Valarie Campos is a graduate of Our Lady of The Lake University and currently reside in Floresville, Texas with her husband and our three sons. She was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis about 21 years ago when her oldest son was a baby.

Valarie and her family have learned to modify their lives to accommodate her use of a walker and a wheelchair. While there are challenging days, Valarie chooses to press on, try to smile and find humor while persevering and does not focus on the Psoriatic Arthritis or the Psoriasis lesions. She is blessed with amazing family and friends that help lift her spirits.

Mike Carroll
Osteoarthritis

Mike received his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and his J.D. from Baylor University School of Law. He practices estate planning, asset protection and probate at his Austin firm, Thrash, Carroll and Vanway Law Group.

Mike is active in his church and he and his wife Lu have 5 children and 9 grandchildren.

Mike is passionate about improving the quality of life for children and adults living with arthritis and chronic pain. Due to a high school football injury, he has knee osteoarthritis that affects his active lifestyle. Non-surgical stem cell and subchondroplasty treatments at Austin OrthoBiologics have provided excellent pain relief over several years. Additionally, he has a granddaughter with juvenile arthritis.

Jose Reyes Medina Jr.
Ankylosing Spondylitis

Jose Reyes Medina Jr. is a father, husband, son and brother, living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), an inflammatory disease that can cause some of the small bones in your spine to fuse resulting in pain and limitations in daily life. After years of back pain, steroid shots, x-rays, stiffness, sleepless nights and lots of Advil, Jose’s journey finally led him to Dr. Thomas Rennie at RAST. Today, Jose’s treatment plan includes biologics, stretching and reducing stress. Jose wants everyone to know how important it is to listen to your body, and to find professionals who are equipped to take a journey with you towards living your best life.

Alison Rosoff
Rheumatoid Arthritis

Alison is a recent transplant to Austin, Texas, originally hailing from Durham, NC. She was diagnosed almost fourteen years ago with systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Her arthritis affects all her joints including her organs. Alison battles numerous daily challenges that come with having arthritis. She is a proud advocate and volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation and recently started a LiveYes! Connect Group in South Austin. She enjoys non-profit work, working with children, and managing her photography company. Arthritis is a commonly misunderstood disease and Alison is proud to help support those who are facing this fight and to raise money to find a cure.

Wan-Hong Wu
Gout

It’s been almost 1 year since Wan-Hong began his bout with gout. After intermittent joints that would swell up occasionally, he woke up one morning with a completely swollen and unusable left arm. After going through the testing process and finding his way to a rheumatologist, Wan-Hong is managing his gout with medications, diet and exercise and he is honored to serve as the Gout Honoree for the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run and Drive.

 

Brooke Garner
Juvenile Systemic Arthritis
Teen Honoree


Brooke Garner is a 16-year-old that lives in Austin with her parents and 3 dogs and is a Junior at Bowie High School. At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with juvenile systemic arthritis. As this is an invisible disease, there is no way to tell the pain that Brooke battles daily. Brooke explains “Every single day, I wake up with severe pain in my jaws, knees, hands, wrists, fingers, knees, ankles, and toes - with the jaw joints being the worst. Brooke is an advocate for the Arthritis Foundation and is determined to be #strongerthanJA!

Mackenzie Hillner
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis &
Psoriatic Juvenile Arthritis
Child Honoree


Mackenzie began her battle with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and psoriatic juvenile arthritis when she was three years old. She lives with daily chronic pain due to swollen joints and painful skin.

Despite the challenges for a 12-year-old facing this disease, her spirits remain high. She loves to share her story and bring encouragement, compassion, and inspiration to those facing similar circumstances. She refuses to let her arthritis define who she is and lives by the motto Faith Over Fear! She is active in theater and choir and loves to be on stage.

Megan Crandall
Systemic Lupus
Lupus Honoree


On the first day of my Senior year in high school, I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus. Through the grace of God, the love of family and friends, and wonderful medical support, I have been able to overcome many struggles related to my disease. With my amazing husband by my side, I have gone from being reliant on a walker to summitting Mount Whitney! 

I now work with individuals living with chronic and acute pain and am passionate about raising funds and awareness for Lupus and other auto-immune diseases and am honored to serve as the 2020 Lupus Honoree.

Woody
Arthritis
Dog Honoree


Woody was first left in front of the Austin Pets Alive office, then transferred to a foster of Wee Rescue and his picture was posted. A friend sent his picture to Mike & Judy Bollom who had recently adopted another dog from Wee Rescue, their application was approved, and he fit perfectly in their home! He quickly picked Judy as his favorite and their bond has gotten stronger through the quarantine. X-rays recently determined that Woody has severe arthritis in left knee as well as the rest of his body. He plows on and is a happy boy at 13 years old!
