2020 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

Joel Brian Shirley, MD
Children's Hospital Colorado
Medical Honoree

Dr. Shirley is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Rheumatology at Children’s Hospital Colorado. He received his medical degree at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2011. He completed his residency at the University of New Mexico in 2014, and his Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital in 2017. I am involved with this event because I simply desire to support and cheer for the children who have entrusted their care to our Colorado Springs based pediatric rheumatology team.

Gary Davenport
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Adult Honoree

In 2010 after months of trying to understand what was happening with his body, Gary Davenport was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He has struggled with endless visits to the doctors, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and depression.

In the years since his diagnosis, he has learned how to live a meaningful and productive life with RA. Gary began a local Live Yes! Connect group to educate people and bring them together with others who “get it”. If Gary had early support from someone who understood what it is like living with arthritis, he wouldn’t have struggled as severely as he did.

Oliver Capper
Oligoarthritis
Youth Honoree

Did you know that kids can get arthritis? Crazy right? Oliver was diagnosed with oligoarthritis at 18 months old. His knees and ankles are affected, along with his jaw joint. It’s hard to tell he’s in pain unless you know him well. He is such an example of enjoying life in the midst of pain.

His family’s faith helps them on this journey. On a recent trip to the doctor, Oliver said, “I’m nervous, but I know Jesus is with me. He will make me brave.”

Join Oliver and his family in the fight against arthritis on May 31, 2020 at the Walk to Cure Arthritis. Register or donate today!
