Ian Hochstetler
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA-ERA)
Youth Honoree

15-year-old Ian Hochstetler was diagnosed with enthesitis-related juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA-ERA) just three years ago. “Before I was diagnosed, I experienced increased pain and soreness after soccer games,” said Ian. “I knew something wasn’t right when the swelling increased and I wasn’t able to walk because of the pain.”  Like other children with juvenile arthritis, it’s taken time for Ian to find the right combination of medication and treatment. In addition to medicine, Ian has learned how to balance his physical activity with diet and rest. He enjoys competing on the swim team, hanging out with family and friends and competing in water jumping competitions with his dogs. “Arthritis has impacted the sports that I play but I’ve learned to be a good communicator with coaches and teachers,” said Ian. “My hope for others with arthritis is that every one of them can find a treatment that works for them. My hope for the future is we find a cure and that the Arthritis Foundation can help spread that cure to every single person who needs it.”

Since his diagnosis, Ian and his family became active with the Arthritis Foundation by participating in many events and activities. In just two years, their Jingle Bell Run team, “Ian’s Reindeer Racers” has raised more than $10,000 towards the Arthritis Foundation’s mission to conquer and cure arthritis. “Before I had arthritis, I planned to get a letterman’s jacket in high school while getting good grades, going to college and making friends along the way. After getting arthritis, I’m happy to say the only thing that’s changed is the fact that I want to keep raising money towards finding a cure!”
