It is with great sadness and after a tremendous amount of thought, deliberation, and work, the CCC Leadership Committee has to announce that the 2020 California Coast Classic (CCC) Bike Tour, will be run as an all-remote ride. Despite all of our efforts since March to build plans, make arrangements with vendors and venues, and prepare for nearly every contingency, it has become clear that the reality of COVID-19 will simply keep us from securing the permits required from CalTrans and the counties and cities along the route to allow us to conduct the CCC 2020 as an in-person Tour this year. All of the permitting authorities have been unable to issue permits because of the pandemic. With the recent spikes in COVD-19 cases in California and elsewhere, and given the timelines of the permitting agencies processes, we have run out of time to wait for things to change for the better. We are left with no choice but to convert the CCC 2020 to an all-remote ride.
Make no mistake, though: The CCC 2020 will still happen – in the form of the Remote Ride X CCC Challenge, presented by Amgen. Our sponsors are still supporting the CCC, our fundraisers are still supporting us, and we will still be riding in October! We have been very fortunate this year to be able to offer for the first time the Remote Ride X CCC (“RR X CCC”) Challenge. In future years, we expect to run the RR X CCC in parallel with the traditional in-person Tour. This year, though, the entire CCC will be conducted through the RR X CCC Challenge. While we will not have the opportunity to ride down the California Coast together in 2020, we will still have the opportunity to ride together as a CCC Community this October – connected as always, but remote and socially distanced. The RR X CCC Challenge has more flexibility than the traditional CCC Tour. The Remote Ride Challenge will run from October 3 to November 1; during these 30 days you are encouraged to log miles where you can and share your efforts!
So while CCC 2020 will be like no other, we will still enjoy challenging ourselves and each other on our bikes, relishing comradery with the CCC Family, meeting new friends and reconnecting with old friends at our CCCBYOB Social Hours, enjoying a virtual start + finish line, participating in prize drawings, receiving our CCC 2020 jersey and prized “high fundraiser” jersey, earning swag and other fundraising incentives, and most importantly raising funds to support the Arthritis Foundation’s mission to help 1 in 4 adults and 300,000 kids with arthritis enjoy their best lives.
We wish we could ride together as a CCC Community this year down the coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and are incredibly disappointed that we just cannot secure the permits needed to make it happen. We will be back on the California Coast in 2021! For this year, though, WE ENCOURAGE EVERY RIDER TO JOIN US IN THE RR X CCC CHALLENGE for 2020! If you registered as a New Rider or Vet Rider on or before 7/27/2020 click here , please do not register again.
With Gratitude for your commitment to the CCC and the Arthritis Foundation,
Your California Coast Classic Bike Tour Leadership Committee
