The Chance of a Lifetime

Hundreds of Kids From Across the Land Power the Bike She Pedals

Jenn McGinnis wasn’t looking for a charity bike ride. But she says the Arthritis Foundation bike tour she first completed in 2022 changed her life. And she keeps coming back for more. “I found it by chance, but I’m staying by choice,” she declares. With a background in nursing, Jen has biked on behalf of hundreds of kids with juvenile arthritis. With their fluorescent names lighting up her cycling jerseys, she also shares pictures of them along the way in selfies she takes at iconic landmarks. “I couldn’t have done the ride if it wasn’t for all those kiddos,” she says. “Thinking of them is what got me down the California coast 525 miles.”

Long Trek, Big Payoff

Mile After Mile He Made New Connections to Reinforce Why He Was Riding

Challenged by gout, a common form of arthritis, Kelly Beerman wanted to do something purposeful and really mighty to give back to the arthritis community. Something on a grander scale than he’d done before. So, he biked for over a thousand miles to benefit the Arthritis Foundation and our quest for better treatments and a cure. He had magical moments all along the way. Slowing down to absorb those special encounters made Kelly more fully appreciate his interactions with his fans on the sidelines. Raising nearly $10,000 in donations, Kelly says the experience was challenging but totally gratifying. So, he wants it to keep going.

The Bonds and Benefits of Cycling Are Tangible, Worth Everything You Put Into It

Despite battling osteoarthritis, Carlos Câmara is living proof that biking for the arthritis cause was made for him. Since 2014, his passion for biking on behalf of the Arthritis Foundation’s mission of conquering arthritis has kept him going. “That’s the reason I do it — trying to help others.” Carlos fell head over handlebars for the California Coast Classic. “I want to help the Arthritis Foundation find a cure and provide money for research, money for people who don’t have the means but are suffering with arthritis, money for families with kids who have juvenile arthritis but don’t have what they need,” Carlos says. He adds that cycling has also helped his mental health. “I’ve become friends with many people just by riding next to them.”
