2023 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

Jeff Hufford
Osteoarthritis
Adult Honoree

After taking a medication prescribed during treatment for Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Jeff was in pain and felt his bones grinding together. Starting in his knees, arthritis has also affected his hip, ankle, shoulder, and other joints. He has had several joint replacements and ankle fusions. He struggles with housework and general mobility, but he tries his best.

Jeff enjoys spending time with family - game nights, attending Cubs games, and Six Flags. When Jeff experiences pain, he relaxes by watching movies and tv. After completing the walk route, Jeff feels a sense of accomplishment and a nice mental boost. He wants to show others that it is possible to have arthritis, live a good life, and not give up.

Mitchell Gratz
Enthesitis Related Arthritis
Teen Honoree

Mitchell’s arthritis diagnosis started with a trip to an orthopedist for chronic back pain. His doctor ordered blood work, and then Mitchell saw a rheumatologist who diagnosed him with enthesitis related arthritis. It affects his back, chest, hips, and hands. Mitchell stays active despite his arthritis. He has been in 4 varsity sports - cross country, soccer, basketball, and track. He loves to spend time in nature, and Mitchell enjoys cooking and spending time with friends. After attending his first Walk to Cure Arthritis, Mitchell felt “extremely inspired and capable of tackling arthritis and living the way I want to”.

Amelia Galayda
Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Youth Honoree

After catching RSV, Amelia developed a fever of 104 that lasted for 18 days, leading to a diagnosis of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Amelia enjoys dancing, singing, and doing anything “fancy.” Above all else, she loves being with her friends, teachers and her family.

Amelia’s parents hope she will know a world where systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis does not put obstacles in her way. They want her to run, dance, play, and accomplish anything her heart desires without pain. “Her happiness is the most important thing to us. We are devoted to making sure she is receiving the best care every day.”
