Katie Taaffe
Legacy Honoree

Katie would have been humbled and proud to be selected as the 2022 Legacy Honoree. She was diagnosed at age 11 with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and fiercely and unceasingly fought her battle with a smile on her face, a song on her mind and most often a paintbrush in her hand.

She graduated with honors from UCF in 2013. She had an affinity for helping young children grow in confidence and a passion for connecting with others to learn their story and cheer them on, which helped her thrive, despite enduring her own battle.

Katie earned her wings on February 28, 2021 at the age of 31. Her positivity and passion for life live on with those who knew her. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. From the moment she became involved with the Arthritis Foundation, Katie felt hopeful and accepted by others like herself. Kinship grew and the members of the Arthritis Foundation became her second family. Using her journey with arthritis to educate and advocate for others is one of her lasting legacies. She truly was an arthritis warrior.

Vivienne Lee Newman
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Youth Honoree

Vivienne was a joyful 14-month-old, running and playing in the park. Suddenly her mood changed; she cried, stopped walking and her joints swelled. After hospital visits and endless tests, Vivienne was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Her family was devastated.

Now 2 1/2, thanks to doctors, medications, procedures, and PT, Vivienne is a resilient toddler - walking, singing and laughing! Her sister, Emma, remains her cheerleader! Her parents say, “The Arthritis Foundation and JA community gave our family wonderful guidance and a shoulder to cry on and we know we can count on them every step of the way. We cannot think of a better organization for our family and friends to support.”
