Karl Koenig, MD

Karl Koenig, MD, MS is the Medical Director for the Musculoskeletal Institute at UT Health Austin. He specializes in treatment of hip and knee arthritis including both primary and revision surgery. Dr. Koenig has dedicated his career to improving health care systems and finding ways to provide everyone with affordable, quality care. It is an idea that was instilled in him from a young age. Growing up in Texas, his family was uninsured and when he was 10 years old, the future doctor found himself in need of a medical care. “I remember our family physician did a little procedure to cut out an ingrown toenail,” says Dr. Koenig. “We were in his office and he specifically knocked off his charge because he knew I was a poor kid. Mark Malone, MD
Advanced Pain Care
Medical Honoree


Mark T. Malone, M.D., is a Board Certified pain specialist and a native Texan. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and went on to attend the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Malone attended Baylor College of Medicine for residency and training in anesthesiology and then completed a pain management fellowship at Texas Orthopedic Hospital in 1998.

Prior to founding Advanced Pain Care in 2002, Dr. Malone was a member of an Austin-based group practice for twelve years and a clinical instructor at Baylor College of Medicine for six years. He is double board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with a sub-specialty in pain management; this is the only board certification for pain management endorsed by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

 

Brendan Gonzales
Juvenile Arthritis/Psoriatic Arthritis, Enthesitis
Youth Honoree

Brendan Gonzales is a 12-year-old seventh grader who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, enthesitis December 2021. Brendan has not let the recent diagnosis keep him from pressuring his Passion for Volleyball. Brendan was recently accepted into the ranks of an elite try-out-based Austin Juniors’ Boy Volleyball Club and was selected as the first male allowed to hold a manager position for the volleyball team at his school. Brendan wants other kids with a similar diagnosis to know that a positive attitude has made his journey much more bearable “Don’t let arthritis keep you down!”
