2020 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

Dr. James Cassidy
Adult Honoree

Dr. Cassidy believes in practicing what he preaches. He combines his professional experience as a Chiropractor and personal experience with Osteoarthritis into a personal mission that involves helping people with arthritis.

Dr. Cassidy used to enjoy power walking until he noticed difficulty finishing his 5-mile walk because of hip and knee pain. As a retired chiropractic physician, Dr. Cassidy knew his progressive stiffness and Orthopedic symptoms were increasing in severity and frequency. As his daily activities became difficult, he stopped exercising and gained weight, further aggravating his symptoms. This was humbling for Dr. Cassidy, as he was running a senior wellness center In Delray Beach at the time and his job was to motivate seniors to make healthy lifestyle changes! Embarrassed by his weight, he finally started to do what was needed to help his doctors help him improve his pain and stiffness. He began light exercise and started to eat healthy and lost 30 pounds!

Without arthritis, Dr. Cassidy may not have found this calling which has provided him a purpose in life and opportunity to help and meet many wonderful people all with their own arthritis experience.  He is glad to have the opportunity to give something back and proud to support the Arthritis Foundation at the Walk to Cure Arthritis along with his new employer Appleton Home Care who have join the fight against arthritis!

Malakai Barahona
Juvenile Arthritis
Youth Honoree

My name is Malakai aka Chino, and I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 8yrs old.  I fell during a basketball game and injured my knee. When I realized that I had arthritis, I felt alone. I wondered “why me?” It is important for people to understand that having arthritis doesn’t have to mean we are incapable or lazy.  All of us are strong and able to do anything we set our minds to do. I said YES to the Walk to Cure Arthritis because it is important for me to help others. My Goal is to raise $3000.
