Anna Kirkman
Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
Youth Honoree

In July 2014, Anna woke up in the middle of the night complaining about her knees hurting. The following night brought the same pain. Since it was summer and she plays hard, jumping off things, her mom chalked it up to overuse. Then, her mom noticed Anna’s knees looked swollen. Her doctor said it was very suspicious to have both knees swollen at the same.

When ibuprofen and naproxen didn’t reduce the swelling, Anna saw Dr. Ferguson in Iowa City. Anna was diagnosed with systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and she was ANA positive. Learn more about Anna here.
