2020 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

LTC Tato Marrero, US Army
Osteoarthritis
Military Honoree

Tato began his fight with arthritis as an Army Ranger. Over 100 jumps from 1500 FT in 24 years put a heavy toll on his ankles and knees. At age 37 he was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, retracted from field work, and began painful infusion shots every six months. Early disability retirement means separation from a military intelligence career that was incredibly rewarding. He had to give up the fight on the field, but he won’t give up the fight for a cure, not just for himself, but for the over 220,000 adults and 1,200 keiki in Hawaii who live with some form of arthritis.

Jimmy Chen, MD
Medical Honoree

Dr. Chen is grateful to be the Medical Honoree for the 2020 Walk to Cure Arthritis. He hopes you can join him in supporting this organization in its mission to assist those who suffer from the various types of arthritis. In his role as a physician, he has observed the hard work and commitment of those within this exceptional non-profit organization. One of the most important programs the Arthritis Foundation funds is patient education seminars. These seminars are physician-led, free to the public and available on almost every island in Hawaii to best serve our local population with information about arthritis.

Brian Ishikawa
Osteoarthritis
Adult Honoree

Brian’s journey with arthritis started in 2016 when he felt terrible pain during the tail end of a hike. A week later, he felt the same shooting pain while just walking in a parking lot after another hike. He was diagnosed thereafter with osteoarthritis in both knees. His entire life he has been physically active…competing in Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting and Jiu Jitsu…and to hear a diagnosis at age 46 that he might not be able to live the life he was used to was very hard. He was able to tackle this new hurdle by educating himself about arthritis with the resources found on the Arthritis Foundation website.
