Jane Scop
Osteoarthritis
Adult Honoree

Jane Scop has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis approximately ten years. Jane’s mind is young but over the last several years, her body is starting to feel her chronological age of 72.

Jane’s mother and her sister had osteoarthritis. As a little girl, Jane remembers seeing them suffer and saying that would never happen to her. Jane is certain her grandmother also had Rheumatoid Arthritis. Her grandmother managed to knit and crochet for every new great grandchild while in constant pain. Jane doesn’t ever remember her grandmother taking any medicine. Thankfully today due to the Arthritis Foundation’s research there are treatments and medicines available for people with arthritis.

Jane decided to participate in the Jingle Bell Run in 2018 after speaking with her occupational therapist and joined their team. Jane managed to finish the 5K, walking with her Belgian Malinois dog who also has arthritis due to a shoulder injury. Jane and her dog will be participating again this year and have formed their own team called “Walkers Without Walkers.”

Jane became involved as a volunteer at the suggestion of her Rheumatologist because she is an active Senior and not ready to become sedentary. Jane exercises, tap dances, hula dances and occasionally line dances at the Senior LIFT Center where she is a volunteer and Recording Secretary. Staying active even when the recliner chair is calling your name is as important as the medicine you take. Some of the members on Jane’s team are also Seniors from the Center.

Seeing a loved one in pain is worse than any pain you feel. Jane hopes that the money she raises and time she gives will contribute to finding a cure for all forms of arthritis.

Eva Karellou-Gleoudi
Juvenile Arthritis
Youth Honoree

I was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis when I was 2 years old and my symptoms first appeared in the summer of 2010.  My knee was swollen and I did not have full range of motion.

At first, we thought it was a broken leg, but then we realized that my knee was not getting better.  I was living in Greece at the time and my mom had to travel with me abroad to see more doctors.  I had MRIs and started taking medication.

Since then I have been on and off medications, with many doctor’s visits and physical therapy.  Today both knees have issues and I am often on medication, but I am very lucky to be able to exercise and do everything kids do at my age. And, I practice yoga regularly.

I am serving as the Youth Honoree to share my story and help other children, adults and families with arthritis to share their stories as well!
