Sydney Adams
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Youth Honoree

Sydney Adams is 16 years old and is one of over 300,000 kids in the United States with juvenile arthritis. She was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in October 2017. When her arthritis is bad, it is hard for her to do everything including walking, standing and sitting. Sydney’s parents took her to the emergency room for a sprained shoulder when she was young…. and it continued from there. She had countless braces for her knees, ankles, wrists and fingers and even spent time on crutches and with a scooter. She was the kid who was “always hurt."

Sydney says of finally being diagnosed with spondyloarthritis, “I wasn’t really shocked. I was scared, though. I was scared of the unknown.” One thing Sydney would like everyone to know about juvenile arthritis is that everyone is affected differently. “We all have our own version of normal. Not everyone hurts the same way. I advocate for arthritis because everyone deserves to have a voice and be heard.”
