Breanna Page
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Youth Honoree

Breanna Page is sweet and high-spirited 3-year-old who lives in Bonfield, Illinois. As a student at Bonfield grade school, she enjoys hanging out with her friends, cousins and playing outside.

Breanna was living a fairly normal life, until one morning one of Breanna’s toes had increased dramatically in size and was painful. Her parents, Britney and Peter, scheduled an appointment with her pediatrician. Unfortunately, Breanna was misdiagnosed and given antibiotics. Her parents were extremely concerned, “We were terrified of how large her toe had become, it was the size of an adult’s toe and incredibly painful”.

After three rounds of antibiotics, MRI, blood tests and a new pain in her knees, Breanna was finally referred to a pediatric rheumatologist who correctly diagnosed her with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). JIA is one of the most common inflammatory rheumatic conditions in children, which approximately affects 300,000 children in the U.S., or one in every 250 kids nationwide. In Illinois, The Arthritis Foundation serves 13,100 children affected by arthritis.

Through the Arthritis Foundation, Breanna’s family found the information and resources they needed to better understand arthritis and how to manage the disease. As a family, they also participate in the Jingle Bell Run and Walk to Cure Arthritis.

Since her diagnosis, Breanna’s family and doctors have worked to find the best treatment combination for her. She currently receives an anti-inflammatory medication twice daily as needed, a chemotherapy drug orally weekly, and a biologic injection bi-weekly. Her dosage of the chemotherapy drug has been reduced. Breanna’s family hopes is to continue on the path to medicated remission. Through her involvement with the Arthritis Foundation, she hopes to increase awareness of JIA and raise funds to help find a cure.
