2019 Jingle Bell Run Honorees

Sheila Rustad
Holiday Inn
Corporate Chair

Sheila Rustad is one of the Sales Managers at the Holiday Inn Fargo and has over 18 years in the hospitality industry but more importantly she is the proud mom of two beautiful daughters Brianna and Katelynn. At the age of 9 Brianna was diagnosed with polyarticular idiopathic juvenile arthritis. As a mother hearing this diagnosis for the first time brought a million questions to Sheila: "How is this going to affect my child both now and in the future? How will this affect our family? Financially what is this going to do to our family? How can I help with the pain? But the one that stuck out the most was, Kids get arthritis?" The next few years were spent worrying, crying, feeling alone, trying to find a way to make her child feel better by any means possible ice, heat, rubbing and baths with little to no relief. At the time Fargo wasn’t fortunate enough to have a Pediatric Rheumatologist and after 5 years they were referred to the University of Minnesota to see a specialist for children. Brianna has tried countless medications that try to slow down or even stop the progression of the disease, however no two people are the same and the doctors have a hard job trying to decide which family of medications will help the patient. Unfortunately, it has been 9 years and Brianna has yet to be in remission. About 3 years ago they were referred by another mom to the Arthritis Foundation. This changed their lives! They received support, understanding and most of all hope. Brianna has chosen to make a difference, this fall she will be starting NDSU and her plan is to become a Pediatric Rheumatologist.
