2019 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

Talisa King
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Adult Honoree

About 7 years ago Talisa was suddenly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis after being symptomatic for about a year or so. She immediately began to search for information and resources to assist her in her diagnosis. Talisa quickly learned there were no local resources within her area. She vowed that once her condition became stable she would be the change she wanted to see regarding any form of Arthritis within her community. Talisa maintains a positive attitude and is inspired to help others all while continuously battling a long journey of doctors’ visits, hospital stays, and various medications from pills, injections to infusions and sometimes even limited mobility. She has become the change she want to see in her community by launching Arthritis Support Network-Buffalo, NY through the Arthritis Foundation in May of 2018 to assist others with any form of Arthritis in her community. Due to Talisa’s efforts in and the support of the Mayor of Buffalo, NY, May 12, 2018 has been named Arthritis Support Network Day in Buffalo. Talisa’s vows to continually advocate and educate about Arthritis in her community to help ensure people with any form of Arthritis receive support and resources. Last year she hosted the first annual Walk to Cure Arthritis Buffalo, NY and raised $13,074 with no corporate sponsorship. She is looking forward to raising more money and awareness this year with the help of her community!

Maya Katashuk
Juvenile Arthritis
Youth Honoree

Maya was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis when she was just in Pre-K. She had to endure numerous tests and blood draws to receive her diagnosis. She has been on 6 different medications and has seen 4 different rheumatologists just to try to continue to treat this disease and its progression since being diagnosed. She has also remained active in trying new sports and activities participating in tee-ball, basketball, acting and girl scouts. We realize how lucky she is that she is still able to remain active and have access to specialized medical professionals with experience treating this disease. There are a multitude of families who struggle to find specialized care and/or treatments to help fight the effects of arthritis. So many people are unaware that kids are affected by arthritis and we are proud to be champions of spreading the awareness. Maya is always willing to share information with others on her journey and experience with juvenile idiopathic arthritis while fighting for a cure.
