Milagros de la Llata was an extremely active child who loved nothing more than playing on the monkey bars, running, and bicycling with her friends. Then at age seven she began experiencing pain in her knees, ankles, and hands. She was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and that was the beginning of her being told all the things she wouldn’t be able to do.
She was told by a doctor that her body was like a human pretzel. Another rheumatologist told her she would be confined to a wheelchair by the age of sixteen. She has spent the rest of her life proving all these people wrong. Fifteen surgeries and over thirty years later, she is walking without a wheelchair and is still extremely active. Thanks to the support of family, friends, and the arthritis community she has been able to overcome her health issues to enjoy a very fulfilled life.
Milagros now lives in San Jose, California with her husband Huy and their dog Oliver. Together they enjoy concerts, travel, and discovering new foods. Milagros is also dedicated to helping other arthritis sufferers. She is extremely excited to be the 2018 Walk to Cure Arthritis San Francisco Adult Honoree and is looking forward to this year’s walk.
