Champions Club & Bandana Inspiration
Inspired by a long-time tradition at the Arthritis Foundation’s SoCal Juvenile Arthritis (JA) camp, Camp Esperanza, each Champions Club member will receive a bandana representing the bandana teen’s participating in the camp’s leadership program is given on their first-year hike. At Camp Esperanza each camper is blindfolded and asked to remember who had tied their bandana and to never undo the knot. The campers are then taken on a “blinded” trust walk, encouraging them to trust the unsighted person in front of them. This trust walk is symbolic of how often life takes us through moments that are intensely frightening, leaving us feeling blindsided, and in a state of despair and loneliness. It’s only through learning to trust the community that we have around us, in which we discover that we can make it through the challenges that we’re presented. Our guided trust walk is about 15-20 minutes, but many are surprised to see that once their blindfolds are taken off, they’ve ended up in a beautiful spot (typically a scenic view on the campsite), not far from where we first started. Like the challenges we go through in life, they can often lead to wonderful destinations that we’ve never expected. Camp truly impacts the way these kids view themselves and how they show up in the world. Thank you for choosing to make a difference in the lives of so many. |
