2021 Walk to Cure Arthritis Honorees

Madeline Barney
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Teen Honoree

Madeline is an Arthritis Warrior. Her experience with arthritis began when she was 13 years old. One morning she woke up and saw rashes up and down her whole body. The rashes came and went for a few days, and then she started to get extremely high fevers and was not able to move out of bed without being in excruciating pain.

After a few weeks and lots of doctor visits and blood work, Madeline was sent to a rheumatologist, Dr. Lawrence Zemel, at Connecticut Children’s Hospital in Hartford, CT. Madeline’s condition is extremely rare and it wasn’t until weeks after the symptoms began that she was diagnosed with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA).
