Alex
Juvenile Arthritis
Youth Honoree

Nine-year old Alex was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis in 2017, after many years of misdiagnosis. Like many, the family was not aware that children could even get arthritis! The pain began in his ankles and knees, and he found it difficult to play sports like his friends did because of the pain. Once he was diagnosed, his parents were able to help his pain and find things that worked for him.

Eventually his juvenile arthritis spread to his fingers, wrists, hips and neck. This meant Alex had to move on to stronger medications and bi-weekly injections. These new advances in treatment have helped him tremendously. He now loves to hike, camp, play video games and is moving towards his black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Injections and medication are never fun, but Alex knows the pain is worse and is lucky to have something that can help that. He knows there are kids out there with arthritis far worse than his. While doctor’s appointments and flare-ups sometimes cause Alex to miss school, he continues to get good grades and work hard at his studies. Alex hopes to be a “You Tuber” or meteorologist when he grows up and share his story.
